Filipino Doctor Reveals Breast Cancer “Highly Curable”

Breast cancer is highly curable if detected an early stage, according to a physician of The Medical City (TMC) Clark, Pampanga in the Philippines.

Dr. Felicidad Claudia Ordonez, head of the TMC Clark Breast Center, disclosed this during the hospital’s first “Post Graduate Course in Breast Surgical Oncology” at Quest Hotel on October 8.

Dr. Ordonez has underscored the importance of breast self-examination in order to prevent and cure cancer.

“Importante yon no kasi ang sintomas ng breast cancer ay bukol so siyempre kung buwan-buwan ay kinakapa ng babae ang kanyang suso medyo memoryado na talaga niya kung ano yung normal na contour ng suso niya. Siyempre siya lang makakapag sabi kung may bagong nakakapa o bagong abnormality doon sa kanyang suso,” said Dr. Ordonez.

In Asia, the Philippines is number one in terms of breast cancer cases, according to Dr. Ordonez.

“Marami ang breast cancer, sa buong mundo actually number one problem yan. Ngayon dito sa atin, sa Asia, number one ang Philippines sa dami ng breast cancer. Kaya importanteng importante kasi hindi alam ng mga tao na ganun siya kadalas. So kailangan parati tayong nauuna kesa tayo ang nauunahan,” the physician said.

Dr. Ordonez cited lifestyle including food and stress level as the possible contributory factors to the increasing cases of breast cancer in the Philippines.

“Hindi ko masabi kung bakit iyan ang resulta pero siguro iniisip ko na lang na lifestyle kasi tayo medyo of western na lalo na yung pagkain natin tapos over the years yung stress level din mas mataas na ngayon. Dati nung mas bata tayo mas relax ang environment pero ngayon lahat parang nagmamadali at lahat may kailangan gawin,” said Dr. Ordonez.

TMC Clark, in partnership with the Philippine Society of Medical Oncology and Philippine Society of General Surgeons Central Luzon Chapter, held the breast surgical oncology dubbed “Diagnosis and Management of Breast Cancer In This Era.”

The event is aimed at providing up-to-date information on the current option, practices, and guidelines in dealing with breast cancer in a multi-disciplinary team approach.

Some 50 physicians from Central Luzon and Metro Manila participated in the event which also showcased a lay forum that highlighted exercise, diet, and lifestyle modification to reduce the risk of developing breast cancer.
