Good news for lovers of spicy foods as a new study has discovered that eating chili can prolong life.

According to a study of more than 16,000 people in the United States, people who eat peppers have a lower risk of death for various causes compared to people who don’t eat spicy foods.

Writers Mustafa Chopan and Benjamin Littenberg of the University of Vermont College of Medicine recently reported their findings in the journal PLOS.

There are many types of peppers, and there are varying degrees of sharpness. The peppers are the fruit of the Capsicum plant, which belongs to the nightshade family. The spicy taste of peppers, like jalapeƱos, comes from capsaicin.

Studies suggest that it has major health benefits. Just like the study reported recently by Medical News Today.

They found out that capsaicin has the potential to stop breast cancer, and another study linked the compound to lowering the risk of colorectal cancer.

According to Chopan and Littenberg, only one study, published in The BMJ in 2015 – investigated how eating spicy foods such as chili affects death risk.

It has found that regular consumption of such food is associated with a lower risk of death for any cause.

This new study supported this finding that people who eat chili peppers may have a longer life expectancy.

Chopan and Littenberg found the result when they analyzed data from 16,179 adults from 18 years of age who took part in the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey III from 1988 to 1994.

In the survey, participants’ consumption of last month was evaluated using a food frequency questionnaire.

Researchers’ explained that activation of TRP vanilloid type 1 (TRPV1) appears to stimulate cellular mechanisms against obesity, by altering mediators of lipid catabolism and thermogenesis.

They added that protection against obesity leads to decreased risk of cardiovascular, metabolic, and lung diseases.

Capsaicin may likewise guard against coronary illness through a TRP-intervened modulation of the coronary blood stream.

Researchers concluded that given the observational nature of both investigations, causality can only be suggested, not confirmed.

Additional studies must target to explore the benefits of other spices and differential effects of certain chili pepper subtypes.

Such proof may lead to new understandings into the relationships between diet and health, modernized dietary recommendations, and the development of new therapies.

Now,  I believe in the saying “pop a pepper, and you might live longer.” Why not? Eating spicy foods like pepper is extremely healthy, offers a number of health benefits, and live longer is just a bonus!
